March is National Nutrition Month, and the theme for 2014 is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” I love this theme because I think it perfectly sums up what registered dietitians are all about. We spend years learning about food so we can talk about it all day long. We all love food, not only for its health benefits but also for its taste. When we educate and help people to work towards change, we also try our best to help them understand where our food comes from and what’s in it. We try to inspire individuals to enjoy “real food” and reap the benefits of a healthier, more wholesome diet.
Registered Dietitians are often thought of as “the food police,” but spend an hour in our office, and most people are pleasantly surprised at what they learn from us. We’re not really here to tell you what you shouldn’t be eating (you already know that). We’re here to help you celebrate the wonderful flavors and health benefits of real food, the kind of meals you take the time to plan out, with ingredients you choose yourself and recipes you prepare yourself. The clean, fresh, seasonal food that you and your family eat and think, “Wow! This is great!” Because when you know where your food comes from, it tastes so much better and you’ll eat more of the good stuff, and that, in turn, makes you feel better.
I came across this short video a while ago, and I love the simple message about how to eat right. It features some advice from one of my favorite food writers, Michael Pollan, about how the simple act of cooking your own food can change your life. Please watch it. It will make you smile when you realize how simple it really is to eat right.
Happy Nutrition Month! Cook something delicious tonight.
